Stillness of Being:
The Black Latifa

This event took place on July 10 & 11.

The Peace That Allows Us to Simply Be

The hearts of many are weighed down with unease and agitation these days. A global pandemic, natural disasters, the inhumanity of armed conflicts, the  divisiveness of politics, the toxic legacy of racism. How do we find a quiet clearing in the woods in the midst of all this?

In this course, we will explore the bridge to that eternally still and peaceful place: The black latifa. It’s not just the absence of fear, self-doubt, animosity, turmoil, and the cacophony of human civilization. It is a living presence of silence that is the birthright of our spiritual nature.

Among all the latifa, this one may seem most relevant—and critical—for our turbulent era. Even in less charged times, our daily experience is often pervaded by earthly emotional reactivity, a mental preoccupation with “doing” things to attain a sense of value or give our life meaning, and obsessive thinking and worrying. In this state, it’s hard for us to feel a sense of peace and stillness.

Yet there is no magic carpet that will transport us to this state of peace and stillness. It is not merely about meditating or transcending. The only way to arrive at that clearing in the forest is to work with our experience, to see what positions and fears we cling to that feed our inner chatter.

As their insubstantiality reveals itself, we can settle into that peace, stillness, and silence. This quality is, in fact, what helps us to quiet the agitation and sit in our truth, unaffected by the day-to-day tensions of life.

“What does the Black latifa do? It stills our consciousness. It makes it peaceful. The consciousness needs to become still and peaceful, with no mental activity or emotional reaction, for these capacities to first open up and be perceived…the more accustomed we are to the inner stillness and peacefulness, the more perceptive we become.”

FAQ

What is the Ridhwan School?

“Ridhwan” is a Sufi word. It means “satisfied and satisfying.” Our school, home to more than 4,000 students across the globe, has the potential to both help you to be fulfilled and to help others be fulfilled. Students learn to ground, sensitize, recognize, and trust the inherent guidance of Being.

What is the Diamond Approach?

The Diamond Approach is the core teaching of the Ridhwan School, a spiritual path that approaches our ordinary experiences, emotions, and sensations in a friendly way of understanding. This radical acceptance of our situation allows something to come through that puts us in touch with our spirituality.

In the Diamond Approach, everything we experience is utilized as a doorway to our spiritual nature. Rather than negating or seeking to transcend parts of our humanness that are considered barriers to realization, we learn to approach each aspect of our physical, emotional, and mental experience with acceptance and open curiosity to discover its truth. We do meditation and other exercises, but the main method is Diamond Inquiry™: non-judgment of what we’re experiencing, which brings crisp clarity into one’s own truth.
