The superego is one of the most powerful unconscious forces cluttering our minds and controlling much of what we think and feel. It is the author of our “shoulds,” a force that takes our historical conditioning—what we’ve learned, how our parents and the world responded to us, and other things from the past—and creates a set of rules that it uses to keep us in line.
Because this childhood survival mechanism is based in fear, judgment, and shame, it can cause a great deal of suffering, impacting our lives, our light, and especially our relationship with ourselves. And because it is often unconscious and subtle, it can even cloud our spiritual experiences, luring us into thinking certain states are ideal, or judging us for certain behaviors it tells us are unenlightened or bad.
On Saturday and Sunday, September 18 and 19, Byron Brown, author of Soul Without Shame: A Guide to Liberating Yourself from the Judge Within, will lead us in an interactive exploration of the superego and help us discover ways we can be liberated from our inner critic, clearing the way for us to experience a truly open and relaxed mind for true wisdom to arise.
“The superego is not actually who you are. It’s a way you learned to talk to yourself; a way you have internalized things to try and make you safe and keep you in familiar territory. But what if you could enter into your life again with a true sense of curiosity and openness to how life can be now?”

“Ridhwan” is a Sufi word. It means “satisfied and satisfying.” Our school, home to more than 4,000 students across the globe, has the potential to both help you to be fulfilled and to help others be fulfilled. Students learn to ground, sensitize, recognize, and trust the inherent guidance of Being.
The Diamond Approach is the core teaching of the Ridhwan School, a spiritual path that approaches our ordinary experiences, emotions, and sensations in a friendly way of understanding. This radical acceptance of our situation allows something to come through that puts us in touch with our spirituality.
In the Diamond Approach, everything we experience is utilized as a doorway to our spiritual nature. Rather than negating or seeking to transcend parts of our humanness that are considered barriers to realization, we learn to approach each aspect of our physical, emotional, and mental experience with acceptance and open curiosity to discover its truth. We do meditation and other exercises, but the main method is Diamond Inquiry™: non-judgment of what we’re experiencing, which brings crisp clarity into one’s own truth.
